About Us

Valley HealthCare System promotes positive mental health, recovery, and a superior quality of life using a holistic approach. Our services range from crisis intervention and counseling to long-term residential treatment and ongoing support plans.

The Valley team offers an array of treatment options, as well as tools and resources to help heal and improve lives.

When we opened our doors in 1969, Valley was one of the first community behavioral health centers in the state. Today we are one of 13, serving four counties in the north central region of West Virginia—Marion, Monongalia, Preston and Taylor.

A Note from Valley’s CEO

When I accepted the job as CEO of Valley HealthCare System in September 2021, the country was still facing the devastating effects of COVID-19.

No one was immune to the suffering, but for those in the healthcare field, it was especially challenging. The pandemic became a daily reality that changed the way we live.

People living with addictions or mental health concerns were hit hard. We began to see setbacks. These setbacks added to the strain of the already-stressed clinicians.

What good can possibly come from such a trial? Surprisingly, we have noticed a few things worth mentioning.

We are resilient.
The Valley team continues to step up. Team members who work at group homes, or those who work at our main locations have dedicated themselves to caring for others. Other staff members who handle meal preparation and building maintenance have also shown the same loyalty to Valley’s purpose—we’re here to help others. It’s been inspiring to see.

We are courageous.
Our clients continue to inspire and amaze us. This has never been more true than during the height of the pandemic. They have powered through some of the hardest times of their lives. Many of them have faced multiple conditions. In these situations, which are not uncommon, our clients face immense challenges.

But as we’ve remained true to our principles, so too have our clients. They work hard to piece together a new life. Although each client is on a private journey, we share in their exuberance with each step forward.

Today, we continue to grow. We finished construction and opened the doors of Valley Treatment Center in Fairmont, West Virginia, in March 2022. At this new nine-acre campus we can serve more people with a full range of services, including residential substance use disorder treatment.

In October 2022, we were awarded a $4 million, four-year grant that will be used to rebuild and expand our services. Sites in our four-county area—Marion, Monongalia, Preston and Taylor—are slated to receive upgrades and renovations that will enhance our services.

I want to thank our community for its steadfast support, not only during this time, but also throughout the years Valley has served West Virginians. We’ve been fortunate to develop strong partnerships with organizations that share in our commitment to serve vulnerable populations. As always, I welcome the opportunity to speak with other leaders who may be interested in working with Valley to develop new avenues for service.

Lastly, my background in clinical psychology and later as a clinical director taught me a great deal about the challenges of healthcare as it relates to mental health.

When you think about it, most medical care is centered on physical care. But for those in behavioral health, there’s an essential need for care that goes beyond physical. It’s the added need for personal connections. Coaching and encouragement play vital roles.

Mental health professionals learn to expect the unexpected. It is these people at Valley—those who carry on the daily work of caring for our clients—who deserve recognition. These are the people I most graciously thank for their dedication, strength and unwavering service.

I look forward to serving our community for years to come.

Sincerely,
Brian Sharp, Ph.D.
CEO, Valley HealthCare System

Valley HealthCare System Compliance Program

Valley is dedicated to providing the highest quality services to our clients while also complying with all federal, state, and local regulations. We accomplish this by following a Continuous Quality Improvement Plan as well as a Corporate Compliance Plan, both of which are updated annually.

The Utilization Management and Quality Assurance Departments provide training and support to clinical staff members to ensure documentation of services meet all necessary and required guidelines and to ensure all services provided are appropriately authorized.

Supervisors report on program outcomes at monthly meetings. The Board Corporate Compliance Committee meets monthly with Valley’s CEO and Compliance Officer to review documentation scores, results of any audits by external stakeholders, and other compliance topics.

We are very proud of the efforts we make at Valley to remain compliant in all areas of our work while also delivering excellent services to our clients. In fact, in recent years, several of Valley’s programs have been recognized by the Bureau of Medical Services as being the best in the state.
